High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is when the pressure in your blood vessels is unusually high. It is often symptomless, but can be serious if not treated.
The only way to find out if you have high blood pressure is to get your blood pressure checked. If you know you have it, lifestyle changes like eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly can help lower your blood pressure. Some people also take antihypertensive medications.
High blood pressure can cause changes to the blood vessels in your retina, such as narrowing and blockages.
During your eye exam, Reti Health's smart algorithm will assess your retinal images for signs of hypertension.
The algorithm’s result is not a final diagnosis and you should not treat it as such. You should attend a local pharmacy for a free NHS blood pressure check. During your visit, a healthcare provider will measure your blood pressure using a blood pressure cuff monitor and provide you further advice about any next steps.
We trained a smart algorithm using retinal images and health data from ~48,000 patients from the UK Biobank. All patients were consenting participants and are aware that their information may be used by companies such as Reti Health to build medical tools.
The algorithm has been validated on a dataset of ~11,000 patients also from the UK BioBank, which were not used during model training.

When tested, the algorithm has achieved a high level of performance in identifying patients with hypertension.
The scan is automatic and happens in under a second.
